Dental Bonding

Many of us opt for teeth whitening treatments when we want to get a dazzling smile. However, whitening treatments may not be right for every patient. Furthermore, whitening solutions don’t address minor smile imperfections, like chipped or gapped teeth. But, dental bonding allows Dr. Yuen to not only whiten your smile, but also shape and reinforce the natural structure of your teeth.

What is dental bonding?

Dental bonding consists of the same composite resin material that Dr Yuen uses to fill cavities. However, dental bonding can also be used as a cosmetic treatment to improve the appearance of:

  • Chipped, cracked, or fractured teeth
  • Gaps or spaces in the teeth
  • Severely stained teeth or teeth that are resistant to whitening treatments
  • White spots on the teeth
  • Misshapen teeth

Why should I choose dental bonding?

Dental bonding material is extremely versatile. Dr. Yuen can easily manipulate the composite resin material to cover minor imperfections and lengthen or reshape your teeth. Additionally, our dentists can expertly color-match the composite resin to your natural teeth. The end result is a perfectly tailor-made smile that you can enjoy for years to come!

Furthermore, cosmetic dental bonding is a conservative, minimally-invasive procedure. This means that very little (if any!) tooth enamel needs to be removed to prepare a tooth for the bonding process.

What can I expect from the cosmetic dental bonding process?

For most patients, cosmetic dental bonding can be done in a single office visit and without any anesthesia. However, if you chipped or fractured a tooth too close to your nerve, then our dentists will administer local anesthesia to make sure you don’t experience any pain during your procedure.

To begin the dental bonding process, Dr. Yuen will color match the composite resin material to match or enhance the natural shade of your smile. After choosing your perfect shade, our dentists will gently prepare your teeth for the bonding material.

Next, your dentist will begin applying the composite resin to your teeth. They will carefully shape and smooth the bonding material into your desired aesthetic before setting the resin with a special UV light. Once the procedure is done, you’re free to continue with your day!

How do I care for a bonded tooth?

Caring for a newly bonded tooth does not require more than regular dental hygiene and maintenance. This means that patients should be:

  • Brushing at least twice daily
  • Flossing at least once daily
  • Rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash
  • Limiting sugary and acidic food and drinks
  • Visiting our dental clinic for routine dental checkups and cleanings

However, Dr. Yuen recommends that patients protect their bonded teeth by avoiding:

  • Excessively hard or sticky foods
  • Using teeth as a tool to open packaging
  • Nail-biting
  • Teeth grinding–or bruxism–by using a mouthguard
  • Dark-pigmented foods and drinks to prevent staining the composite resin
