Tooth loss doesn’t just take a toll on your oral health–it takes a toll on your mental and overall health, too. That’s why our dedicated and skilled team of dental professionals at Castro Valley Dental Home provides patients with quality tooth-replacement solutions. Implants, bridges, and dentures are the normal options for replacing missing teeth.

Why do I need dentures?

Tooth loss makes chewing, speaking, and smiling more difficult. However, missing teeth don’t just prohibit you from eating certain foods–it could also lead to worsening oral health conditions and further tooth loss.

Prosthetics like dental bridges, dental implants, partial dentures, and full dentures all help to restore your natural chewing and speaking function. Additionally, these restorative appliances help to prevent your existing teeth from shifting, deter jaw bone deterioration, and keep you from losing your remaining teeth.

Who is a good candidate for dentures?

Patients who are missing several teeth are ideal candidates for dentures. However, the extent of your tooth loss will dictate which type of denture is best for you.

Whether you need partial or full dentures, our talented dentists will need to examine your mouth to verify your candidacy. During a gentle yet thorough exam, our dentists will be looking for:

  • Healthy gum tissue
  • Sufficient bone density
  • Cavity-free and healthy remaining teeth

In some cases, patients will need to remediate any oral issues before beginning the dentures process. However, patient education, involvement, and satisfaction are Dr. Yuen’s priorities. He will ensure that you understand and agree to every step of your personalized treatment plan before beginning.

What can I expect from the dentures process?

Whether you’re getting partial, full, permanent, or removable dentures, the process begins by taking oral impressions. Next, our dental team sends your oral impressions to a qualified dental lab to expertly craft your custom-made appliance. While creating your personalized dentures, the dental lab will consider your stylist preferences and natural aesthetic to make a prosthetic that matches the color of your gums and existing teeth.

After your denture is completed, an appointment is scheduled to check the fit, feel, and appearance of your new appliance. Be sure to let our dentists know if your dentures feel loose, hurt, or don’t meet your expectations. We understand how important it is to have teeth that feel normal to chew on and smile with. We’re more than happy to give you the comfortable and beautiful smile that you deserve!

How do I care for my new dentures?

If your new dentures are removable, then you’ll need to remove and clean them at least once a day. However, special care must be taken to prolong the life of your appliance, such as:

  • Rinsing your dentures after eating
  • Using a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive toothpaste to brush your dentures daily
  • Soaking your dentures in water or a mild, ADA-approved denture cleanser while you sleep
  • Brushing and flossing your remaining natural teeth every day

If you have permanent dentures, then little more than twice daily brushing (with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste!) combined with once-daily flossing is enough to maintain your restoration. Depending on the anatomy of your gums and bone, is possible that your denture may require some adhesive in order to stay in a stabilized position.

Nevertheless, patients with partial, full, permanent, or removable dentures are encouraged to visit our Castro Valley Dental Home team at least every six months. Regular dental checkups and cleanings will ensure that your smile is healthy and your prosthetic lasts for years to come.
