Restorative Dentistry

If you have decayed, damaged, or missing teeth, a restorative dentist can renew your dental health. At Castro Valley Dental Home, Dr. Matthew Yuen and Dr. Ava Chen are dedicated to providing the most realistic restorations possible to restore oral function and improve appearance. No matter what type of restorative dental procedure you will receive, we will explain every step of your procedure.

Dental Crowns

A crown is a full tooth-shaped restoration that can repair and strengthen severely damaged tooth structure. Crowns are great options for chipped teeth, worn teeth, or severe decay. This dental restoration goes directly to the existing tooth, so your dentist will need to reshape the tooth before attaching the tooth-shaped cap. We offer crowns made from biocompatible material, so the color and shine will match the existing teeth. In some cases, a dental crown can be considered cosmetic. For instance, some people prefer to restore their smile with crowns as a natural way to fix teeth that are crooked, chipped, or malformedDr. Yuen and Dr. Chen have extensive experience with taking these instances and restoring natural looking smiles!

Dental tooth-colored Fillings

Patients of any age can get cavities, which can cause bad breath or weakened teeth. Fillings are the most common restorative procedure for cavities. Sometimes you may feel sensitivity in the teeth but a lot of the time they can go unnoticed, which is dangerous. By cleaning out your decayed tooth and replacing the damaged tissue with a composite material, your practitioner can stop decay from spreading and simultaneously strengthen your tooth structure. We chemically bond a tooth-colored composite to the tooth for the best long-lasting results that will blend with the surrounding teeth. Composite resin fillings are conservative way of taking care of decay before it gets worse- the longer cavities are left without filling, the larger they become, presenting a greater risk of root canals or losing the tooth due to non-restorability.

Root Canals

When your tooth has an irritated nerve, either from infection or from other causes, it may cause a lot of. Bacteria can even move down through your roots and into the surrounding bone. A common restorative dental procedure, root canal therapy, can eliminate infection and ease discomfort. Dr. Yuen and Dr. Chen clean out your tooth and roots to remove the infected areas then fill it with a solid material, thus saving the tooth and allowing it to function normally. A crown is needed afterwards to make sure the tooth is restored to full strength to avoid any fractures. Root canals may have a bad reputation, but Dr. Yuen and Dr. Chen have patients who say this was the most relaxing procedure they had-some even fall asleep because they’re so comfortable!

Tooth Removal

Although it is usually a last resort, sometimes it is the best course of action to remove a tooth, when the tooth is doing more harm than good. This can be the case if the tooth is badly decayed, has an infection, has severe bone loss or mobility, and cannot be restored. In these situations, the tooth may have negative effects on the bone, nerves, and even the surrounding teeth. To prevent further pain and damage, we use gentle techniques and offer sedation to make this process of removing the tooth  as gentle and easy as possible. Dental implants, bridges, or dentures, may be good options for replacing the missing tooth and we will be sure to discuss the benefits of each of them as we figure out the best choice for you moving forward to restore your smile!

Crooked teeth are not only an issue for cosmetic dentistry. Dental misalignment can also increase your risk for tooth decay, gum disease, TMJ disorder, and worn teeth. As part of our restorative dental services, we proudly offer Invisalign®. We will take impressions of your teeth, and these measurements will be used to create custom aligner trays. Wearing the trays will gradually shift your teeth into healthier positions in your mouth. Best of all, the trays are almost unnoticeable, so you will not have to deal with the appearance of traditional metal braces.
